  • In the counselling work as a social worker in the field of victim support, rape myths as well as their dissemination and effects are part of the daily practice. This master's thesis shows how problematic their existence is with regard to the processing of experiences of violence and the way the overall social handling of sexualized violence. How rape myths are ex- pressed and to what extent they are part of the media discourse on sexualized violence will be examined by means a critical discourse analysis. The theoretical discussion already shows that some of the widespread rape myths make use of a cultural-racist stereotype which, according to various scientific studies, has a decisive influence on criminal prosecution. Therefore, a further focus of the study will be on the spread of this culturalization of violence. As a result of the theoretical discussion and empirical investigation, it is found that the discourse on sexualized violence is composed of different strands of discourse, whereby the criminal and perpetrator-oriented perspective predominates while constructive representations and affected persons are less present. This overlaying strand of discourse makes it more difficult to address sexualized violence as a social problem and limits the representation of the term due to the legal categorisation of sexualized violence as an offence. From the perspective of social work, the discourse needs more focus on relevant information for those affected, more contextual information and the recording and naming of violence as a structural problem for society as a whole.
