  • This master thesis highlights the reality of modelling in business practice and the problems companies encounter in this context. For this reason this thesis will answer the leading question of how companies can use the knowledge of systems theory to avoid problems in model development together with the sub-questions derived from this. These sub-questions aim at both whether models can be considered as representations of reality and which decisions a company has to make in order to address models correctly. This work is primarily aimed at companies and students of business process management, as well as all interested readers who ask themselves how model building can be optimised with knowledge of systems theory. By means of intensive literature research and selection it is shown it is shown that a model cannot and must not include all properties of a system. Furthermore, the importance of a good target group analysis and target definition is elaborated in order to correctly reflect the modelling language, limits and purpose of the model and to thus reach all addressees with the right information. This work conveys informationen that has the potential to derive a model based on company’s reality and at the same time transform it into an excerpt of the true situation.
