Potential study of thermal load transfer in spacious residential buildings using thermal heat pump, solar thermal power and photovoltaics

  • In the future realizing the energy supply of buildings, using renewable energy systems will increase. A reason for this incline can be found in the steady improvement of building technology, such as the decrease of the energy demand by improving insulation standards or using more effective energy supply systems. The volatile characteristics of energy generation is a major challenge when using renewable energies. By thermal load transfer the thermal energy can be stored in times of low supply from renewable energy systems up to a certain extend. In this study three different methods of thermal load transfer are being evaluated. The building simulation is implemented in TRNSYS, while the simulation of control strategies is realized in Polysun. The examined methods are firstly the regeneration of the geothermal probe of a geothermal heat pump, secondly raising the maximum temperature in the heat storage tanks and lastly increasing the room temperature of the reference residential buildings, as well a combination of all three stated methods. The results show that the probe regeneration effectively increases the annual performance factor of the heat pump and the solar thermal coverage of energy needs. In the reference case the probe temperature can even be increased temporarily to a higher level. An additional increase of the annual performance factor can be achieved by combining the probe regeneration and raising the maximum storage temperature in times of high renewable energy yield. Here, the solar thermal plant can use an enlarged range of temperature, which also increases the coverage rate further and is therefore recommended for the reference system. The raising of the room temperature has the most potential for the increase of the photovoltaic self-consumption rate and improves the annual performance factor of the heat pump through the expanded use in the low temperature range significantly. However, the load transfer increases the demand for heat in the examined reference residential building so much, that it exceeds the benefit of the renewable energy which additionally have been made usable. Therefore, this method is not recommended in that case. As the thermal building activation is here only realized for certain building features and only via underfloor heating, it must be noticed, that the results are only partly transferable, as they differ with different building features. Therefore, it is recommended, that this method is simulated and evaluated separately for each different use case.
