  • The financial and economic crisis of 2008/09 has prompted the questioning of existing in-centive systems. This paper examines the involvement of management accounting in the incentive design from this point on. The methodology is a systematic literature research and expert interviews, which are evaluated along the design elements of the incentive sys-tem. Since the period under review, significant developments can be observed from indi-vidual to group incentives, from the use of monetary incentives to the use of mixed incen-tives (monetary and immaterial). The latter is reflected in the assessment bases that use financial and non-financial indicators. Long-term-Incentives are promoted to generate sustainable corporate development. Management accounting is closely involved in the incen-tive design process when defining the assessment basis' and 'incentive functions'. Management accounting has a wide range of tasks: reporting, translation of business objectives into assessment bases, knowledge transfer, harmonization of objectives, and the steering function in decision-making. Seen from this perspective, management accounting as-sumes additional responsibility and supports management in designing incentives, which suggests that the role of the management accounting is being transformed into that of a business partner.
