Dynamics of silicon carbide formation in graphite electrodes through carbothermal reduction in gas phase

  • Due to the progressing climate change new ways have to be found to decelerate this trend and to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. One way to achieve this is recycling of the CO2 directly at its source. Because of the high thermal and chemical stress of the used electrodes, ceramics are the materials of choice. A ceramic material, which is suitable for this use is silicon carbide (SiC). SiC is a wide-gap semiconductor with high thermal and chemical stability. The production process of highly pure, porous SiC is very complicated and expensive. Hence, new techniques of producing this material are investigated. In this thesis the formation of SiC in graphite templates, using different sorts of porous graphite and doped sol gel precursors at a carbothermal reduction process is studied. For this purpose, different numbers of cycles of the carbothermal reduction process at an induction furnace are performed on the different graphite templates. In this process the precursor gets pyrolyzed. One result of this pyrolysis is a gas phase reaction of the pyrolysis products with the carbon within the graphite templates converting carbon to SiC. The samples gathered this way are scanned with a micro tomography device. As a result we gain knowledge regarding the depth of conversion and the formed structures inside the different graphite templates, depending on the number of cycles of the high temperature process performed on them and the used doped precursor. The electrical properties of the different templates are not discussed in this thesis.
