  • With their thermal storage capacity heat pumps, in particular heat pump boilers are a good option for autonomous Demand Side Management (ADSM). In addition, this type of domestic hot water generation is becoming increasingly important in private residential building sector due to its decentralized approach and the fact that it does not require fossil fuels. In combination with government funding, the number of units sold on the German market has increased by around 25% in the past 5 years. Although the load shifting potential of heat pump boilers by using optimization algorithms is theoretically proven in literature, verifications under real conditions are missing. On the one hand this work aims to demonstrate the theoretical potential, on the other hand to contribute closing the verification gap with the laboratory test presented. For the investigation, a commercially available heat pump boiler consisting of an air sourced heat pump and a 300 liter hot water tank is equipped with sensors and actuators. A total of four temperature sensors are located at the storage inlet and outlet, as well as close to the middle of the storage. A magnetic-inductive measuring sensor is installed at the storage inlet to measure the volume flow. In addition, the desired user profile is realized by using a proportional valve at the storage outlet. The data acquisition is carried out by a data logger and the optimization routine is implemented on a PC. The autonomous control is based on a linear optimization driven by day-ahead market prices of the Energy Exchange Austria (EXAA) with the aim of minimizing the costs of electrical energy. The hot water consumption profile shows the consumption of a 4-person household. All measurement and simulation series are based on the same day-ahead price functions and user profiles. To verify the load shifting potential, the costs per MWh of electrical energy and the costs per MWh of thermal energy in hysteresis operation (normal operation) are compared with those of optimized operation. The theoretical potential could be demonstrated by an annual simulation. The evaluations of the costs per MWh show cost savings in the day-ahead market of around 18%. The optimization reduced the cost per MWh of thermal energy by around 19%. Thus, thermal efficiency could be increased by 1%. The heat pump boiler was operated for a total of two weeks, with the first series of measurements taking place in normal operation. In the following series of measurements, the heat pump was operated with the optimization routine. The evaluations of the costs per MWh of electrical energy show cost savings in the dayahead market of around 23%. The costs per MWh of thermal energy were also reduced by 19%. At the same time, thermal efficiency dropped by 6%.
