• The digitalization of companies and the advance of Industry 4.0 are among one of the most frequently discussed topics in recent years. With Industry 4.0, buzzwords such as “Internet of Things” or “big data” have also emerged, which are responsible for connecting production via the internet, processing data, and, thus, gaining a competitive advantage. On the other side, there is the proven Lean Six Sigma method, which has gained popularity in companies and has been applied to organizations’ processes worldwide. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the impact of the digital transformation on the Lean Six Sigma method. This also influences the research question: what opportunities and risks does the digital transformation through Industry 4.0 pose for the use of Lean Six Sigma in companies? To address this research question, this thesis leverages a multitude of expert sources that theoretically and practically examine the connection between Industry 4.0 and Lean Six Sigma. As such, this research focuses on the theoretical-conceptual area, and a total of 47 relevant papers were identified in the process. Through analyzing the expert sources and contributions, the researcher has identified four technologies that have emerged as having significant influence on the Lean Six Sigma model and DMAIC cycle. These technologies are big data, data mining, process mining, and simulation. A detailed analysis of the literature demonstrates that an interaction of the two methods is beneficial, but it also highlights that a few risks should be considered. Keywords: Lean Six Sigma, Industry 4.0, big data, data mining, process mining, simulation
