- With Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) a major change has been announced in companies. This is particularly noticeable in the field of manufacturing and production. Companies should benefit from the fourth industrial revolution by digitizing and automating processes, implementing new technologies and ensuring competitiveness. Therefore, IIoT is seen by many companies as an opportunity. With the use of digital technologies, companies hope to fully exploit their potentials and gain competitive advantages. With regard to Industry 4.0, however, small and medium-sized companies are faced with challenges. There are multiple reasons for that which are examined in the present master’s thesis. This means that SMEs are lagging behind in terms of technical, digital progress in the context of Industry 4.0. It is difficult for them to determine their own status quo and to make the right decisions in order to successfully master the hurdles of Industry 4.0. In order to achieve this, it is advisable to analyze where the respective company currently stands and how it would like to stand out in order to be able to align its decisions specifically to the transformation of Industry 4.0. Orientation aids such as reference or maturity models that address the needs of SMEs and are explicitly geared towards their individual requirements are an important part of the master’s thesis. Therefore, the following research question should be answered in the present master’s thesis: Why are IT processes particularly critical for SMEs in Industry 4.0 and can a supporting, maturity-based reference model be developed to improve IT processes?
