Umgang mit negativen Effekten in Talentmanagement Programmen von Vorarlberger Großunternehmen

The ability of water to form cage-like structures and capture gas molecules under high pressure and low temperatures lead to problems in gas pipelines, especially in the mid-20th century. Also, there is an enormous amount of this so-called gas hydrate, captured in deep sea sediments or in terrestrial permafrost soils in which they reserve a possible degradable energy resource. On the other hand, they also maintain a high risk to enhance the ongoing climate change. At the same time, through their high energy storage ability, gas hydrates exhibit a high potential for industrial applications like alternative energy storage, carbon capture technologies or cleaning of exhaust emissions through separation and storage. But through their complex kinetics and ongoing dynamics through induction, synthesis and dissociation, the usage of hydrates is still far away from relevant industrial application. To make the potential capable there is still a huge amount of basic research necessary: Specially to shorten the induction time. An earlier thesis at FH-Vorarlberg exposed a potential method to shorten the induction time through a stirred reactor with an extremely high stirring rate without the usage of promotors. Therefore, this thesis is dedicated to expose the possible reasons for the witnessed effect through high stirring rates (>10000 rpm) at different pressure and tempera-ture conditions. The goal is to show possible physical effects to shorten the induction time of hy-drate synthesis. Therefore, a stirred reactor is used in which the possible effects should be investi-gated through the research with CO2 hydrates. In the research, there will be a closer look on phe-nomena like cavitation, increasing the phase interface through stirring or pressure fluctuations. The results of this thesis show an interesting connection between pressure, stirring rate and increased phase interface. Furthermore, there are also some exposed significances between stirring under spe-cial conditions which were exposed through statistical analyses. The results show that stirring could possibly be a new driving force when executed under the right conditions.
Today, industrial B2B manufacturers face a rapidly changing environment, exacerbated by increasing globalization and associated shifts in the competitive landscape. Digital transformation and the emergence of new innovations and technologies are forcing companies to rethink their business models and offerings to integrate digital services to strengthen competitive advantages. Suppliers are becoming more deeply involved in customer processes through digital after-sales services, with the aim of exploiting efficiencies. Following the servitization transformation, companies intend to change their purpose from focusing on the pure physical product to becoming a service provider with emphasis on value creation and the capture of the customer.
To investigate how customer and supplier perspectives agree and what requirements each side has for digital after-sales services, exploratory qualitative research was conducted with customers and suppliers by means of one-on-one interviews. The thesis aimed to assess the status, progress, and future possibilities of implementing digital after-sales services and business models based on them. Research shows that the far-reaching establishment of product-accompanying services with strong connectivity and customer-centricity is primarily relevant. Disruptive business models still require a mind-shift and organizational readiness on the part of both customers and suppliers. In principle, digitization in after-sales interaction is beneficial and should be steadily advanced to make customer processes as well as further developments at the supplier level more efficient and well-founded through the analysis of real data. Overall, this thesis outlines important aspects that need to be considered while developing digital service innovations to deal with customer demands appropriately.

Debugging errors in software applications can be a major challenge. It is not enough to know that a specific error exists, but the cause of it must be found in order to be able to fix it. Finding the source of an error can be time and cost intensive. The general approach is to analyse and debug the presumably erroneous part of the software. The analysis can be accompanied by instrumentation to gather additional information during the program execution. The analysis is made more difficult by the existence of different errors categories. Each category may need to be handled individually. Especially in embedded software applications, which commonly lack features like process or memory isolation, error detection and prevention can be even more challenging. This is the kind of problem this thesis tackles. This thesis tries to support developers during debugging and troubleshooting. The main focus is on errors related to memory management and concurrency. Specific features and properties of Arm Cortex-M processors are used to try to detect errors as well as their causes. For example, the memory protection unit is used to isolate the stack memories of different tasks running in a RTOS. The thesis tries to provide as much information as possible to the developer when reporting errors of any kind. The solution developed in this thesis also contains a custom memory allocator, which can be used to track down errors related to dynamic memory management. Furthermore, a Eclipse plugin has been developed which provides assertions for array accesses to detect and prevent out-of-bound accesses. The resulting solution has been implemented in commercial embedded software applications. This ensures that the developed solution is not only suitable for newly developed applications, but also for the integration into already existing products.
This master thesis investigates drivers and barriers of innovation workshops for an intercultural participant group. Actively dealing with innovation management is considered vital for companies which are acting on competing markets. An innovation workshop is a useful tool in order to foster innovation ability, develop innovative ideas and drive innovation forward. Intercultural participant groups are not only a common challenge in today's business world but also entail several benefits as they incorporate diverse knowledge bases and perspectives and hence contribute to the ideation and innovation process. Within the master thesis a broad variety of barriers and drivers are evaluated. Main barriers of innovation workshops for an intercultural participant group are high conflict potential, miscommunication, language barriers, a lack of management support, no agreement on workshop objectives as well as poor workshop preparation, organization and facilitation. Main drivers of innovation workshops for an intercultural participant group are a heterogeneous group composition, intercultural competence of the facilitator, the opening up of mindset silos, an intensive workshop preparation and empathetic facilitation. These drivers and barriers build the basis for the determination of success factors and recommendations for action for organizers and facilitators of an innovation workshop for an intercultural participant group. In the further course of the paper an exemplary workshop design will be presented as a guideline and framework for managerial practice

Blood flow and ventilatory flow strongly influence the concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in exhaled breath. The physicochemical properties of a compound (e.g., water solubility) additionally determine if the concentration of the compound in breath reflects the alveolar concentration, the concentration in the upper airways, or a mixture of both. Mathematical modeling based on mass balance equations helps to understand how measured breath concentrations are related to their corresponding blood concentrations and physiological parameters, such as metabolic rates and endogenous production rates. In addition, the influence of inhaled compounds on their exhaled concentrations can be quantified and appropriate correction formulas can be derived. Isoprene and acetone, two endogenous VOCs with very different water solubility, have been modeled to explain the essential features of their behavior in breath. This chapter introduces the theory of physiological modeling of exhaled VOCs, with examples of isoprene and acetone.
Data is the new oil,” said British Mathematician and Tesco marketing mastermind Clive Humbly1. Data has also been described as the backbone of digital retail enterprises2 and the currency of the digital age. Whether these statements live up to be true is debatable, but what is certain is the fact that the internet age has contributed to the avalanche of data witnessed today. In a century dominated by predictive analysis and artificial intelligence, it is no surprise that by the end of the last decade, data companies Apple, Amazon and Microsoft closed as the world´s first trillion-dollar companies, with their revenues dwarfing economies of several countries across the globe.3The recognition of the importance of data in today´s economy bears with it the responsibility to protecting its owners. While this intricate balance has long been the subject of legal analysis the General Data Protection Regulation, 2018, is hailed as the world´s most comprehensive and strict data protection regime currently in force. In addition to protecting the personal data of persons from its member countries, the Regulation also seeks to ensure the same protection accompanies any data transferred out of the European Union to other countries. It is almost 5 years since the Regulation was passed and process of implementation into business operations an important topic of discussion. Of importance to this study are the Modernized Standard Contractual Clauses, a tool of data transfer to countries outside the EU, which replace the three sets of SCCs adopted by the now repealed Data Protection Directive 94/46. These Standard Contractual Clauses came into effect on 27th September 2021, and companies have until 27th September 2022 to rely on the old set of clauses. With this deadline coming up, how far have the clauses been integrated into operations by businesses in Austria and the EU?
The humidification dehumidification (HDH) cycle is a process for thermal water treatment. Many studies were carried out investigating operation of an HDH cycle with water and seawater as working liquid. Currently research into other areas of application is limited. Exchanging the working liquid in the humidifier from seawater to a water oil emulsion and investigating its behavioural changes is the basis for the expansion into applications such as bilge water treatment. This master’s thesis covers analysis of the behaviour of an HDH cycle operated with a water oil emulsion. The main elements are (1) proof of concept for operation of the HDH cycle with a water oil emulsion, (2) comparison of measurements and thermodynamic calculations, (3) investigation of the impact of operating parameters and (4) optical analysis of the bubbly flow in water and oil.
Operation of the HDH cycle using water oil emulsion was shown to be feasible with a small change to the setup previously used for investigations with seawater as working liquid. To keep the emulsion from separating into its individual parts, constant movement of the working liquid needs to be ensured. For this a magnetic stirrer was introduced into the bubble column humidifier (BCH) used. In a batch process an oil concentration of >97 % was reached without visible traces of oil in the produced condensate.
Comparison of the measured and thermodynamically evaluated productivity shows that measured productivity is higher. The proposed explanation for this is supersaturation of air at the BCH exit. Further investigation into this phenomenon is needed to confirm this hypothesis.
Influential parameters investigated are (1) liquid temperature, (2) superficial air velocity and (3) sieve plate orifice diameter. Increase of liquid temperature results in an exponential increase in productivity. At superficial air velocities up to 3 cm/s productivity increases with superficial air velocity. For superficial air velocities higher than 3 cm/s productivity plateaus. At low superficial air velocity, an increase of sieve plate orifice diameter results in increasing productivity. Further increase of the sieve plate orifice diameter inverses this phenomenon.
Bubbly flow in water and oil is influenced by the different viscosities of the liquids. Water creates small bubbles of similar size at low superficial air velocities. At superficial air velocities >2 cm/s turbulences start to increase and finely dispersed bubbles are present in the water. Bubbly flow in oil creates larger bubbles at all superficial air velocities. The airflow transitions to plug flow at velocities of 3 cm/s and above.
Result from this master’s thesis can be used for as a basis to broaden the understanding of the HDH cycle and find new areas of applications.

Active demand side management with domestic hot water heaters using binary integer programming
(2013)
Load shifting of resistive domestic hot water heaters has been done in Europe since the 1930s, primarily to ease the power supply during peak times. However, the pursued and already commenced energy transition in Europe changes the requirements for the underlying logic. In this more general context, demand side management is considered a viable approach to utilize the flexibility of thermal and electrochemical storage systems for buffering energy generated from renewables. In this work, an autonomous approach for demand side management of energy storage systems is developed, which is based on unidirectional communication of an incentive. This concept is then applied to the specific problem of resistive domestic hot water heaters.
The basic algorithms for an optimized operation are developed and evaluated based on simulation studies. The optimization problem considered, maps the search for the optimal heating schedule, while ensuring the temperature limits defined: Firstly, a maximum, which is defined by the hysteresis set point temperature; Secondly, during hot water draw offs, the outlet temperature should not fall below a set minimum. To establish this, the time series of hot water usage has to be predicted.
Depending on the complexity of the hot water heater model used, the formulation of the problem ranges from a linear to non-linear optimization with discontinuous constraints. The simulation studies presented, comprise a formulation as binary linear optimization problem, as well as a solution based on a heuristic direct method to solve the non-linear version. In contrast to the first linear approach, the latter takes stratification inside the tank into account. One-year simulations based on realistic hot water draw profiles are used to investigate the potentials with respect to load shift and energy efficiency improvements. Additional to assuming perfect prediction of user behavior, this work also considers the k-nearest neighbors algorithm to predict the time series. If compared to usual night-tariff switched operation, assuming perfect prediction shows 30 % savings on the electricity market when stratification is taken into account. The user prediction proposed leads to 16 % cost savings, while 6 % of the electric energy is conserved.
Based on the linear approach, a prototype is developed and used in a field test. A micro computer processes the sensor information for local data acquisition, receives electricity spot market prices up to 34 hours in advance, solves the optimization problem for this time horizon, and switches the power supply of the resistive heating element accordingly. Beside the temperature of the environment, the inlet and outlet temperatures, the temperature inside the tank is measured at five points, as well as the water volume flow rate and the electric power recorded. Two test runs of 18 days each, compare the night-tariff switched operation to the price-based optimization in a real-world environment. Results show a significant increase of 6 % in thermal efficiency during the operation based on the algorithm developed, which can be contributed to the optimization accounting for the usage expected.
To facilitate the technical and economic feasibility for retrofit-able implementations of the method proposed for autonomous demand side management, the sensors used must be kept to a minimum. A sufficiently accurate state estimation of the storage has to be achieved, to facilitate a useful model predictive control. Therefore, the last part of this work focuses on the aspect of automated system identification and state estimation of resistive domestic hot water heaters. To that end, real hot water usage profiles and schedules gathered in a field test are used in a lab setup, to collect data on the temperature distribution inside the tank during realistic operating conditions. Four different thermal models, common in literature, are considered for state estimation and system identification. Based on the data collected in the lab, they are evaluated with respect to robustness, computational costs, and estimation accuracy. Based on the observations made in the experiments, an extension of the one-node model by a single additional parameter is proposed. By this adaption, a linear temperature distribution in the lower part of the tank can be modeled during heating. The resulting model exhibits improved robustness and lower computational costs, when compared to the original model. At the same time, the average temperature in the storage tank is estimated nearly as accurate (6 % mean average percentage error) as in the case of the about 50 times more computationally expensive multi-layer model (4 % mean average percentage error).
